Client: Excelsior Designs

Opportunity:  Create a cost efficient direct mail solution that communicates Italian style


 As Excelsior Designs began receiving thousands of consumer leads generated by the national advertising we placed on their behalf, the cost to print, stuff, and mail packets of brochures skyrocketed.  
We devised a plan to give their design savvy consumers a taste of Italy that would leave them salivating for sensual furnishings—Italian style…and save Excelsior Designs time and money.  The solution needed to communicate the breadth of their line which ranged from sumptuous leather to Art Deco-inspired bedrooms to sparkling stainless accent pieces while also creating an emotional connection to the Italian lifestyle.


 Classically Modern…the title resonates as clearly today as when we created this magazine four years ago.  Each of the 3 issues in the series was chock full of the best of Italy offering destinations, food and libations, design trends and decorating tips using their existing photography along with custom photography we directed.


The complimentary magazines were promoted in Excelsior Designs’ national advertising campaigns, on their web sites, and at select retailers.  Designed to have the consumers’ names direct imprinted on the back and efficiently mailed using a specialty fulfillment house, our turnkey program effectively communicated the products and brands—at less than the cost of the multi-brochure package previously fulfilled in-house.  Now, that’s amore!

Kincaid Furniture, a La-Z-Boy company
Client: Kincaid Furniture

Opportunity:  Create an integrated trade and consumer solution that generates retailer commitment and exposes a new solid wood and custom upholstery collection to highly targeted consumers.

 case 3Kincaid Furniture, a La-Z-Boy company, was readying an extensive new collection to be available in 6 unique finishes and 3 distinctive lifestyle designs.  Kincaid’s talented design team created a showroom display representative of the colorful assortment in its coastal, cottage and urban styles.  Having developed the positioning statement, tagline and logo for American Journal…a story of home”, we had insight on how to present the collection to consumers.  Always supportive of their retailers, Kincaid also wanted to drive traffic to the stores.  Our strategy?  Present the collection to trade and consumer media at the High Point Market launch with a comprehensive press kit, media and retailer invitations, a series of trade ads, and an “icing on the cake” sales-driven program to help Kincaid reps guarantee retail placements.

 A national consumer advertising campaign featuring custom photography and retail store listings cinched the deal for many retailers… we started by selecting the environments and then directed the inspiring coastal, cottage and urban photography.  To qualify for the store listing and satisfy consumers responding to the beautiful ads in Coastal Living and Cottage Living, retailers committed to specific display requirements that were communicated via a series of sales aids.  This ensured those who viewed the ads and visited the retailers saw a consistent brand image when they visited their area Kincaid “American Journal” retailer.

Metropolitan Home
Client: Shermag

Opportunity:  Develop a strategic plan and execute the launch of a new home furnishings collection from an internationally known design magazine.

case2 When Metropolitan Home magazine and designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz partnered with Shermag to launch their debut collection of contemporary home furnishings, we were brought on board to support this large-scale initiative. Our background in understanding the complexities and opportunities between manufacturer, designer and established brand got us the gig.  As the liaison between the three partners, we immersed ourselves in every aspect of the collection: writing the positioning statement, crafting the copy used in all communications, facilitated the logo creation, and developed the public relations program, trade advertising, and consumer advertising components.  Metropolitan Home

 Working in tandem with Shermag and Met Home’s creative resources, we began with a series of sleek, creative eblasts.  Sent to Shermag’s sales reps and retailers, each was a building block to familiarize them with the philosophy of the magazine and designer, and then offered intriguing glimpses of the collection with a call to action to visit the showroom and see this fabulous furniture collection firsthand.  Key retailers were sent the latest copy of Metropolitan Home magazine along with a personal letter from the editor. case2 Press kits were created; numerous interviews with the editor and designer were coordinated; teaser ads were procured with noted trade publications; catalog conception, layout, and development was completed; sales training and retail planning guides written; an exclusive launch party was planned and facilitated; a consumer website and dealer locator was developed; retail events with the designer and Met Home executives were scheduled and executed; and national and regional advertising plans were devised.  We helped bring the Metropolitan Home Collection vision to life.

Client: Woolrich

Opportunity:  Develop a marketing program to launch a “new” brand to the home furnishings industry

When historic Woolrich made a strategic decision to license its longtime brand in home furnishings, The Media Matters was chosen to lead the charge for public relations and advertising.  Since 1830, the brand had cultivated a strong following of its outdoors-inspired apparel and blankets.  To ensure a successful home furnishings debut, the expansion into furniture, lighting, rugs, wall d├ęcor, table linens, and top of bed needed to be communicated across channels of distribution throughout the U.S.  Because of its broad coverage of home products, HFN was chosen to carry the 8-page booklet that would be the cornerstone of the marketing program and convey the essence of the brand to potential retailers.

woolrichAfter creating the “look” using a nature-inspired color palette, we directed the location photography to showcase the new home furnishings products in a fashion consistent with the brand’s longstanding heritage.  Existing photography from the extensive image archives at Woolrich was integrated and the copy communicated the attributes of the brand.

The final booklet was polybagged along with HFN issues prior to the debut of Woolrich Home Furnishings and also distributed to each brand partner to use as handouts at their trade shows in New York, Atlanta, and High Point.  Complementary showroom signage and a host of other sales and marketing collateral ensured the brand’s message was seamlessly and consistently communicated.  A far-reaching public relations campaign, along with a well-attended press party at the High Point Market resulted in extensive national exposure for Woolrich Home Furnishings…which continues to be a media favorite to this day!
